We have recently been introduced to www.150bikes.com who are a website that specialise in sourcing and selling good value bikes in London.

People often ask us for bicycles less than £200 and we normally send them away...however now we can point them to 150bikes.com.

They have both new and second hand bicycles for sale and hope that the average price on the site for the bikes is £150 (hence the name).

This could be a great site for people who want to buy a bike for leaving at the station etc...we would always however recommend you buy from Cloud 9 Cycles!

Yes it is true...Cloud 9 Cycles are (at this moment in time) the only bike shop in London to hold these amazing bikes!

The Acids have been a phenomenon ever since they were first put on display as a prototype a few years ago.

The double top tube design was so popular that Commencal decided to push forward and put them into production.

After adding a rear brake and some final adjustments the bikes were released in December 2011...and guess who got some of the first batch :-p

Built as a Singlespeed or Fixie they ride lovely and can be used as a trick bike as well as commuting bike.

They certainly catch peoples attention and are sure to become a collectors piece in the near future.

What we have learnt in 18 months given to you for free:

Cloud 9 Cycles has been open for just over 18months. We have learnt a lot and want to share what we have learnt.

We hope that you find the information below useful and please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.

Lesson 1 – Puncture Proof Tyres:

Question: “I am looking to upgrade my tyres, which should I go for?”

Answer: “Puncture Proof Tyres!”

Every day we have customers with punctured tyres. It doesn’t matter how old the tyres are, what sort of bike they ride or where they ride it, at some point normal tyres will get punctured...especially on London roads.

A puncture is (in our opinion) the worst thing that can happen when riding. The machine that was helping you glide effortlessly along is now your enemy as you push it to the nearest shop or try to repair it on the side of the road.

If you get a puncture on the way to work you will be late and get into trouble, if you have one on the way home then you are losing your own free time (you could be at Cloud 9 Cycles!).

Because of this we highly recommend people to fit puncture proof tyres.

What is a Puncture Proof Tyre and How do they work?

Basic bicycle tyres consist of a cloth casing covered by a thin rubber tread (usually 1mm) with no puncture protection. Puncture resistant tyres have various layers of material inserted between the tread (e.g. Kevlar) to help protect the delicater inner tube.

Puncture proof tyres (e.g. Schwalve Marathon Plus) have a thick layer of springy SmartGuard rubber in the tread. So long as the tyre is kept to the recommended PSI any objects that penetrate the rubber will not be able to reach the innter tube and are then forced out as the wheel rotates (see pic below).

How resistant is “Puncture resistant”?

We can only speak from our experience. We have sold in excess of 100 pairs of these tyres and only seen 1 puncture (which came from an inch long screw in a piece of wood).

Both Kris and I have done over 5,000km on these tyres and neither had a puncture.

Our comparison of the types and cost of tyres available is as follows:

Is the extra cost worth it?

Definitely!

We probably shouldn’t be saying this but puncture proof tyres are a great financial investment. Not only can you use your bike for longer but if you purchase cheaper tyres and have 2 punctures repaired it is the same cost as buying puncture proofs in the first place!

Are they heavier than normal tyres?

A bit heavier than normal tyres but as you do not have to carry a puncture repair kit, spare tube and pump the gross weight is actually less.

Do they have more rolling resistance on the road?

From all the scientific testing they do add a small bit of extra resistance (they have a deep tread which is great for winter riding) however unless you are planning on completing the Tour De France it should not affect your ride.

I have heard they are hard to get on and off?

They are a bit harder, but once fitted you should not have to remove them until you change tyres (at least 3 years ).

We are a bit bored of the battery bikes produced by the major firms that lack a bit of character, soul and passion and so we are really trying to push customers towards investing money in a one-off tailor made bike rather than buying an off the shelve product.

Cycling gives a £2.9billion Boost to the British Economy - Well done everyone!

A report into the economic benefits of cycling in the UK has found it's worth £2.9bn to the economy, with almost a quarter of the population now cycling.

The study, carried out by the London School of Economics (LSE) and commissioned by British Cycling and Sky, attempted to find the 'Gross Cycling Product' (GCP) in the UK. It took into account everything from bike sales to the saving of reduced sick days due to cycling, calculating a GCP of £230 per cyclist.

According to the report, the basis for the boom lies in increases in participation. 208 million cycling journeys were made in 2010, with 1.3m new cyclists from 2009, bringing the number of regular cyclists to 13m. 40 percent of households now own a bike and driving this growth were factors such as a 200 percent expansion (an extra 12,000 miles) of the National Cycle Network.

The GCP took into account factors such as bicycle manufacturing, cycle and accessory retails and cycle related employment. A 28 percent increase in retail sales help shift 3.7 million bikes in 2010, generating £1.62bn. The rest of the £2.9bn can be broken down into cycling accessories and maintenance (£853m), bike-related employment (25,000 people generating £600m in wages and taxes) and reduced work absenteeism (£128m).

And the report suggests even more gains can be made in the future, with frequent cyclists saving the economy £2bn in reduced sick days in the next decade. Just a 20 percent rise in current cycling levels by 2015 could save £207m in reduced traffic congestion and £71m in lower pollution. It also claims there is around £516m of untapped economic potential for people waiting to start cycling, with barriers including cycling road safety and confidence needing to be broken down.

The report concluded that the industry showed strong signs of sustainable growth in the long term. It suggested that while the recent economic downturn had most likely contributed to cycling’s resurgence, factors such as environmental concerns, increasing health awareness and international sporting success shouldn’t be downplayed. It says efforts to “normalise” cycling need to be stepped up, addressing obstacles to participation like safety and access.

Dr Alexander Grous, LSE, who conducted the research said: "The good news is that structural, economic, social and health factors seem finally to have created a true step-change in the UK's cycling scene. The growth in involvement we've witnessed in recent years feels like a sustainable trend for the first time. In order to build on this momentum and follow the lead, in participation terms, of countries like Denmark and the Netherlands, it's now essential that the industry focuses on converting the many occasional, lapsed and leisure cyclists into regular and frequent riders."

It has serial number Q2051 which we think makes it from approx 1968.

It has some blemishes on but for a 40yr old frame is in nice condition.

We are as of yet unsure if we will keep it or sell or it build another Cloud 9 Custom Built Bike out of it.....

Bike Register chosen by the Met Police...

Bike Register has been chosen as the preferred cycle register and bike marking product for London by the Metropolitan Police.

45,000 bikes were stolen in the last 2 years according to Selectamark (the company who owns BikeRegister) and it is there plan to significantly reduce this.

In the past year a MET Cycle Task Force has marked more than 12,000 bikes in London. There has already been a 5% drop in bike thefts in comparison to 12 months ago.

The display cabinets are in, slat wall is up and flooring is laid and we are ready for business!

New Helmet Sensor Makes Cycling Safer!

Cycle helmets are rapidly evolving in terms of technology. Researchers in the US have developed a helmet with an add-on device that calls for help should it sense an impact strong enough to render a rider unconscious or otherwise incapacitated.

The SenseTech HALO is now in the final stages of prototyping. One of the developers, Dr Timothy A Bauer, principal clinical research scientist at the University of Colorado, says: “Essentially, it isn't a helmet but an aftermarket device that can be used with existing helmets.”

The concept was devised by Biju Thomas, who is no stranger to bicycle racing. He’s a professional chef who serves up meals to pro riders. “I see this as a broad use item, not just intended for elite athletes,” says Thomas. “Our device is meant to be small and un-intrusive enough to be wearable in multiple activities whether wearing a helmet, headband, ball cap or similar — any activity where the user could receive head impact or injury.”

HALO could be useful for any sport where helmets are worn, but Thomas and Bauer had cycling in mind. The system they’ve developed combines a wireless device that fits into the air vent on top of a helmet with sensors embedded in the fused fabric. The device can transmit a signal via radio frequencies or Bluetooth technology to a rider’s smartphone.

Bike Revolution Tags - Beat the Thief!

You can then use a bar code scanner on your phone or type the number onto the website and your bike is registered.

If it then is stolen you can update your records and when someone checks the bikes code it will show that it is stolen and then be returned to its rightful owner!

What came first...the bike or the meatball..?

You may have noticed that in Sainsburys a new range of meatball has been introduced...the infamous Cloud 9 Meatball.

Like our bikes they are natural, good for you and tasty!

We are trying to contact the company behind the meatballs and see if we can partner up somehow to offer the greatest eating/cycling event in history!

One of our customers cycling through Zambia...please help!

One of our favourite customers Naomi Mead is raising money for her epic cycle trip across Zambia..Nao is pictured below preparing for the ride in South London Pacific...hard training pays off!

Cloud 9 helped build Nao a custom bike in 2009 (pictures coming soon) and she is now so into her cycling that she has signed up for a 500km trip across Zambia to help raise money for education in some of the poorest parts of the country!

We promised we would try to promote her ride as much as possible and encourage any one we know to help her raise money for the trip!

Well almost!

Kris and Adam went to the London Bike show on Thursday and had a look around at what was on display and were really impressed!

Great new Bikes/Frames are coming from Surly, Cinelli and Tifosi as well as some great gadgets (like Spylamp...a light and a GPRS system for your bike!).

After reading through all the catalogues we will get as many of the products in as possible and hope you like them as much as we did!

Goodbye to the Corsa!

Cloud 9 are happy and sad at the same time...

We recently sold our beloved Raleigh Corsa to a great bloke named Tim.

He assured us he would take great care and keep him locked up safe and indoors at night (he is afraid of the dark).

After saying our goodbyes he was gone...quicker than we could have imagined.

Tim has been back a couple of times since and we are pleased to report that the bike is doing great!

If you happen to see Tim or the Corsa around town please say hi and let us know!

Happy Christmas and New Year....a bit late we know but we have been thinking about our plans for this year and these are our results:

1) To keep providing (with what we hope) is the best bicycle sales and service in London.
2) To start producing more Custom Built bikes for people...or as we like to call them: Free Range Bikes (no battery bikes produced here
3) To keep trying to get as many people cycling as possible
4)To keep you happy!

Camden Cycling Campaigns Slow Race!

In the recent Car Free Day in Camden the CCC organised a slow race to see who could take the longest time to ride 15 meters down a pre-determined track.

C9C provided the top prize and hope that the event encouraged more people onto their bikes!

Raleigh Team TI Bike - 1975 Model for Sale..come have a look!

Hi All,

C9C have been fortunate enough to get hold of a 1975 Raleigh Team Ti Frame built with Reynolds 531 Tubing.

Although there are some blemishes to the paintwork the frame is in great condition with Campagnolo Dropouts and Headset.

The size of the frame is:

Bottom Bracket - Seat Tube - 23" / 58cm

Seat Tube - Head Set - 22" / 55cm

The frame is straight and solid and the horizontal dropouts allow this bike to built into an awesome fixie or S/S bike!

Jessica Graham and Cloud 9 Cycles - The latest in Fashion and Bespoke Bikes

C9C took a blank bicycle frame to up and coming designer Jessie Graham at her West London studio with the specific instructions of:

"Go nuts and do what you like!"

One week later and we just picked it up.....it is amazing!

Using her own designs and artistic skills Jessie has created an awe inspiring frame that is currently being lacquered but will soon be built up and on display in Cloud 9 Cycles. Below is a picture of the front of the frame and there will be more to follow once we get it back!

Who is Mr. Eddy Merckx hanging out with?!

As you can see from the pic below the one and only Eddy Merckx asked for Kris and Adam's autographs when he saw them at the Earls Court Bike Show.

Apparently Eddy has heard about Cloud 9 Cycles and had to meet the people involved to get some new inspiration.

We were of course more than happy to help him and hope to see him again soon in Camden!

Cloud 9's New Toy!

C9C have recently acquired a new toy that they hope will be ready for rental in the coming months!

A 4-seater bicycle!

This was originally used as a stage piece but will now be worked on by Kris and Adam to make a fully functioning way of transporting friends and family around!

Some people have compared it to the Flintstone mobile and we have been yabadabadoooing all week!

We shall keep you updated with our progress but until then please see Kris testing it out for size!

Cloud 9 Cycles Aids Deloitte in their Ride Across Britain

OK so it may be a slight exaggeration but on the 30th September Cloud 9 Cycles helped Deloitte in the logistics of re-enacting their Ride Across Britain in the London Excel Centre.

With renting some of C9C's Single-Speed Road Bikes and using our van to help move bits around Cloud 9 successfully aided them into putting on a great event for all of their sponsors!

Deloitte were a pleasure to work with and we were glad to see on Bike Radar the following announcement:
